At some point in your academic career, you are going to have to write papers. In fact, you will most likely have to write often and in multiple different subjects. By following some general guidelines you will set yourself up to always succeed with your academic writing.

Understand the Assignment

First and foremost, make sure you know what the guidelines are for your assignment. Whether it is from a syllabus or a specific assignment, make sure you know what the topic is, the expected length of the paper, what citation style you should be using and any other guidelines that will impact your grade. If you are unclear of any guidelines, make sure to ask. You cannot succeed on an assignment if you do not know what is expected of you.

Give Yourself Enough Time

Don't procrastinate. Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to complete your assignment, including brainstorming, research, and review of your final drafts. Nothing will hurt your chances of having a successful paper more then not having enough time.

Follow a Process

There are several processes that can help you be successful with your academic writing. For example, brainstorming first, researching, outlining your research, writing your rough draft, and then completing a review is a process that is successful for most students. Figure out what process works for you and then follow it. It is also helpful to have a location that is dedicated to your research and writing. It will help you get into the proper mindset for your writing. Consistency in how you attack your academic writing will make each paper easier and easier.
